Introduction and Getting Started with the Topic
Friends, in this content, I am talking about my previous content, What is Systematic Game Design, which is frequently sent to me on social media? I tried to cover the subject of Game Design, which I stated that I would do in my content. First, let’s start with two summary answers. Game design is the process of creating and shaping the mechanics, systems and rules of a game.
Game Designer is the creative person responsible for bringing a game to life. He is often a cross between a writer, artist, and programmer. Game design is a multidisciplinary field that encompasses the process of creating and developing interactive experiences known as video games.
When we question what to pay most attention to in this area, we come across Game Mechanics, Storytelling, Level Design, User Experience – Interface and Visual Design.
How to Design a Game?
Game design is a process that involves a series of systematic and repetitive stages. In the first phase, the initial phase, the basic ideas and goals of the game are determined. This phase also includes pre-production stages such as research, prototyping, and creating design documents. Planning and improvement of the game’s mechanics, characters, levels and general structure are also carried out at this stage.
In the production phase, the focus is on the actual implementation of the game. Working with game designers, programmers, artists, sound designers and other professionals, they begin to bring their ideas to life. Tasks such as programming game mechanics systems, creating art assets, composing music, and integrating these elements into a harmonious whole occur during this stage.
After the game is created, the testing phase begins. Game designers participate in or recruit volunteers for game testing to gather feedback, identify problems, and improve the overall experience. The process of testing, refining and iterating continues until the game is completed and ready to be released.
What to Consider in Game Design?
Game Mechanics: Game mechanics refer to the rules, interactions, and systems that govern gameplay. It determines how players interact with the game world and each other. Designers carefully design these mechanics to create immersive and meaningful experiences.
Storytelling: Storytelling plays an important role in many games, providing narrative structuring and context to the player’s actions. Game designers work on developing compelling characters, stories, and environments that increase emotional engagement.
Level Design: Level design is the design phase that involves creating the environments, challenges, and puzzles through which players navigate the game. Game designers carefully design levels to provide a balance of fast-paced exploration with a challenge that will keep players engaged and motivated.
User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX): The user interface is the means by which players interact with the game. Designers focus on creating intuitive and user-friendly interfaces that enhance the overall experience, making the game accessible to a wide range of players.
Visual Design: Visual design is the concept that covers the game’s art style, graphics and visual effects. It directly affects the atmosphere, aesthetics and overall appeal of the game. Designers work with artists to create visually stunning and cohesive experiences.
There is a key point that everyone who goes deeper into the question of What Does a Game Designer Do? should know. This clay point is that a game designer should not hesitate to get his hands dirty while designing his game and should prepare himself for this.
